₹1,185cr for women employment and safety program in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Special programme implementation minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Thursday announced a five-year programme called Tamil Nadu Women Employment and Safety with an investment of 1,185 crore and support from World Bank.A series of initiatives would be taken up under the scheme, including conducting psychometric tests for govt school students in classes VIII to XII to assess talent, ‘Earlyprenurship’ programme from this academic year to teach students entrepreneurial skills and establish an information bank on skill development and job opportunities. Replying to the debate on demand for grants for the department, Udhayanidhi said role of women was significant in realising the ‘Dravidian model’ govt’s target of a one trillion economy. “The scheme will be implemented at 1,185crore for the next five years (2024-29),” he said, outlining the programme’s specifics. The initiative would be started initially in eight districts, identifying women’s skills and evolving a quality employment programme. A women’s information bank would be set up to provide details relating to skill development, entrepreneurship, psychological counselling and employment, besides workplace safety. A talent assessment platform would be introduced to assess skills of girl students in classes VIII -XII in govt schools through psychometric tests, helping them choose suitable careers. The initiative plans to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience by offering industrial internship training to final-year students in govt colleges. Science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) centres would be established in all 10 women’s industrial training institutes and four women’s polytechnics, benefiting 4,000 students. Model creche-cum-after-school care and elderly community hubs would also be created to support women workers and the elderly living alone. As a follow-up to the Naan Mudhalvan scheme (a skill development programme for students), a mega programme called TN-Skills-Finishing Schools would be launched to provide job-seeking graduates with access to skill development opportunities tailored to their degree, skills and interests. At the end of training, internship and employment camps would be conducted. “Best institutions have been selected to offer skill-based courses with international certification and industry recognition. The companies would provide full and partially subsidised ‘skill vouchers’ to the youth.”The Naan Mudhalvan scheme, which offers skill-based courses for various streams, would be expanded to include paramedical courses, benefiting 40,000 students. Another new scheme, Sigaram Thodu, would be launched to provide skill development training and employment opportunities for 1,000 top students from rural areas studying in arts, sciences, and engineering courses.
