Book highlights stories of mothers caught up in the criminal legal system

There are currently 643 women in Massachusetts prisons and jails, according to state data. While it’s only 5.5% of the total number of incarcerated people in the state, more women get tangled in the system in other ways. For example, when their children are charged with a crime.

A new fictional book, “Motherlove,” tells stories of mothers whose children were charged with murder. Jean Trounstine’s book of short stories is based on true events. She’s been an advocate for incarcerated people and a teacher in the prison system for more than 30 years. Trounstine joins Radio Boston to discuss.

Also joining, Stacey Borden, who spent three decades in and out of prison. She’s now the executive director of New Beginnings Reentry Services.
