Canada applauds Cambodian women’s role In UN peacekeeping

Canada has applauded Cambodian women’s role in the military sector, especially in mine clearance and the United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Ms. Jacqueline Jean O’Neil, Ambassador for Women, Peace, and Security of Global Affairs of Canada, shared her appreciation in a meeting with Gen. Sem Sovanny, Director General of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, Mines, and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance (NPMEC) in Phnom Penh on June 27.

She emphasised that Cambodia is working hard to promote women’s participation in peacekeeping both in the country and under the UN umbrella.

Sovanny spoke highly of the intimate relations and good collaboration between Cambodia and Canada, adding that this is the 33rd anniversary that Canada sent its troops under the framework of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) to maintain peace in the country.

The director general asked Canada to continue providing training to the Cambodian peacekeeping forces and to increase exposure visits between NPMEC and Canada’s peacekeeping institutions.

Ms. Jacqueline Jean O’Neil pledged to consider the director general’s request and will respond after a decision is made. AKP
