Widows Summit: Empowering Women through Advocacy and Support

Widows from various LGAs of Akwa Ibom State came together on Tuesday, June 25th, 2024 for the highly anticipated first-ever Widows Summit with the theme for 2024 International Widows Day: ‘Accelerating the Achievement of Gender Equality’, a groundbreaking event aimed at empowering and uplifting women who have lost their spouses.

Hosted by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Uyo Branch in collaboration with Golden Initiative For All (GIFA) and Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN ) Akwa Ibom Chapter, the event took place at the prestigious NBA Uyo Secretariat.

In her Welcome Address, the Chairperson, Iquo Abia, Esq. on behalf of FIDA Uyo Branch, celebrated the resilience, strength, and invaluable contributions that widows make to their communities despite facing numerous challenges. She observed that widows often play crucial roles as mentors, caregivers, and providers for their families.

She thanked His Excellency the Governor of Akwa Ibom State for fostering inclusivity, particularly, for building compassionate houses for widows. The Chairperson also extolled Her Excellency, Pastor Mrs. Patience Umo Eno’s magnanimity by empowering over 250 widows.

Worthy of note is the presence and contributions of Rt. Hon. Precious Selong, member representing Urueoffong/ Oruko State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. She encouraged the widows to participate actively in economic and political endeavours.

The summit provided a platform for widows of all ages and backgrounds to learn about their rights, discover their strengths, and connect with others in similar circumstances.

The summit featured inspirational speakers such as Chief Mag. Helen Umana, Mrs. Ekaette Umoh, Dr. Uduak Ime Usanga and Prof. Emmanuel Umana, interactive workshops and networking opportunities designed to build a sense of community and solidarity among widows. Participants engaged in meaningful discussions on crucial topics, including financial independence, mental health support, and legal rights for widows. Additionally, they enjoyed some indoor games such as ludo, with prizes awarded to the winners.

A noteworthy moment of the summit was a panel discussion showcasing prominent advocates and experts in widows’ rights who shared valuable insights and guidance on navigating the challenges faced by widows in society. The panel sparked essential conversations and presented practical solutions to address the unique needs of widows. MWAN also offered free basic medical check up for the participants.

In conclusion, the Widows Summit was a resounding success, allowing widows to share their experiences, gain knowledge, and support one another. With a renewed sense of empowerment and communal backing, attendees departed the summit feeling inspired and motivated to champion for the protection of their rights and carve out a brighter future for themselves and their families.
